Palmetto Gold History
In December 2001, a coalition of nurse leaders representing major nursing organizations in South Carolina met to discuss the formation of an annual statewide nursing recognition program that would both showcase the valuable contributions nurses make to patient care in our state and to raise funds to provide scholarships for registered nurse students. In May 2002, the plans reached fruition as the first Palmetto Gold Gala was held. The Gala proved to be a huge success and the proceeds were sufficient to provide a $1,000.00 scholarship in each registered nurse program in the state.
The program has a two-fold purpose. The first is to recognize Registered Nurses in our state who exemplify excellence in nursing practice and commitment to the nursing profession. This is accomplished through an annual nomination and selection process that includes nurses from across the state and from a variety of practice settings. The 100 nurses who are selected each year for this prestigious award are honored at the annual Palmetto Gold Gala. To date, over 2,100 nurses have been honored with this award.
The second purpose of the program is to support the future of nursing by using the proceeds from the Gala event to provide an annual $1,000 nursing scholarship to each registered nurse undergraduate program in our state. The first scholarships were awarded from the 2002 Gala proceeds and the recipients recognized at the 2003 Gala. In 2008, the Renatta Loquist Graduate Nursing Scholarship was created to honor Mrs. Loquist, a member of the original Palmetto Gold committee and a leader in nursing in our state. This scholarship is for $2,000 and has been awarded each year since. Since its inception, Palmetto Gold has awarded over $540,000 in nursing scholarships.
The Palmetto Gold Steering committee is an all-volunteer committee that is responsible for the program implementation. It is a special committee of the South Carolina Nurses Foundation, Inc. a 501 C-3 organization.
Palmetto Gold is grateful to all benefactors who recognize the nursing profession through their financial support and in-kind generosity. These gifts provide support for the nurse recognition program and scholarships for students in registered nurse programs in South Carolina.
